Kadhalil Sodhappuvadhu Yeppadi Review: A Perfect Screw “Up”!

A tribute should aptly be paid to feature film debutant Balaji Mohan for making a truthful, honest and realistic film about contemporary love affairs that bloom in your college days. The movie feels far better than a Hitch, What Happens in Vegas and My Best Friend’s Wedding! Kadhalil Sodhappuvadhu Yeppadi is a genre like no other except that it can be identified as a romantic comedy.

Shortly after Gateway contestant and winner Bejoy Nambiar made his debut with Shaitan, another top 6 finalist of the show, Balaji Mohan, has debuted with a feature film to mark his entry. Kadhalil Sodhappuvadhu Yeppadi is about human tendencies that come in the way of love and relationships. Further to Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus, Kadhalil Sodhappuvathu Yeppadi tells you how relationships fall apart and what one can change in himself to make the best out of relationships.

Kadhalil Sodhappuvadhu Yeppadi is more about how to succeed in love than about how to screw up in love. Siddharth (Arun) and Amala Paul (Parvathi) break up due to unfathomable differences between them. About two to three subplots find their love life troubled and how their final reconciliation happens makes the rest. The climax and pre-climax speak close to your heart, as we, adults, realize the mistakes we made. We watch Kadhalil Sodhappuvadhu Yeppadi with a sort of cringing embarrassment over our past mistakes and realization of the hilarity in our daily love life.

The subtle to slapstick humor strewn all across the length and breadth of the film makes the film very engaging. The quivering voice of one of Siddharth’s accomplices whenever he confronts girls, another friend of his getting slapped by girls all the time, silly ideas to woo girls that lead to hilarious situations and ex-boyfriend of Cathy (Played by VJ Pooja) conniving to break her relationship with her fiancée John are some of those hilarious moments with scores of interludes on the film’s messages on no couples are made for each other and no one is perfect provide some heartwarming moments.

SS Thaman is always a choice of mediocrity for a debutante feasible enough with his scale. Songs such as Parvathi and Azhaippaya could be hummed enough though not chartbusters. The first half ends with very little story behind but a lot ahead and we would expect adequate dose of fun, frolic, humor and laughter. It is due to the adequacy of juxtaposed emotions that the film satisfies every viewer unlike in the first half. In both the first and the second halves, the subplots of Siddharth’s friends are more engaging than the Siddharth-Amala Paul main plot.

Kadhalil Sodhappuvadhu Yeppadi streams fresh blood into love stories in Tamil movies. It is not about the hero bashing tens to hundreds of goons after a rape attempt amidst blaring horns at Mount Road. It’s only about the day to day problems that naturally arise in love affairs between men and women due to their differences. Meanwhile, technicians and actors such as Nirav Shah, Siddharth, Amala Paul and Madhan Karky need to be appreciated for taking the film seriously which actually is adapted from a short film, made by Balaji Mohan, with the same title and this time, the adaptation goes just the right way.

Positives

  • Balaji Mohan
  • Hilarity
  • Genre
  • Screenplay
  • Siddharth & Amala Paul’s Performances

Negatives

  • Over Use of Subjective Narration

Verdict

A film is a reflection of a director’s personality. Yet, it should be universal, even if autobiographical. Balaji Mohan assorts the stories he has probably experienced, accumulated or witnessed. He learns and conveys what he has learned. Fortunately, he has learned what is wise and not something half-baked.

Future generations could express completeness in thoughts and imagination than the current generation that falls short of it every time from which the future generation learns. He has also deftly handled accomplished technicians as Nirav Shah for cinematography, Siddharth for lead cast and Madhan Karky for lyrics.

Kadhalil Sodhappuvadhu Yeppadi is realism, real skill and talent. Realism is in what each and every human life experiences than in the life of some violent minority touted as realism by filmmakers. Kadhalil Sodhappuvadhu Yeppadi portrays the life of each and everyone and finds humor in the day-to-day experiences with a sort of clever smartness in writing and understanding of life. Kadhalil Sodhappuvadhu Yeppadi – Kattipudi Vaithiyam!

Rating: ★★★★☆
