It happens once in a blue moon for the maestro Ilayaraja. He often remarks that his choice for the new directors bring in lot of freshness since such directors come out with fresh ideas. If we can apply any yardstick to assess Ilayaraja’s musical charm with current trend we can only draw no conclusion. Because a genius has his own set of rhythm and would not prefer to be bracketed with latest composers. For decades of his presence in the film industry, Ilayaraja creates his mastery with a new and classy approach. He sounds mild through his presence and on certain frequencies he delivers what others cannot even imagine. If our memory is sure then Ilayaraja’s exile for movies started after his mega hit in Kadhalukku Mariyathai where the song Ennaithalata Varuvalo is still a classic melody. Thereafter songs from some films adduced his mastery as in the case of still Naan Kadavul.

Noticing his skills, ace actor Prakash Raj has employed the services of Ilayaraja for his film Dhoni. The latest to be added to the list of best performance from the maestro is from the film Mayilu. Perhaps, the title is quite sentimentally triumphant for Ilayaraja since the old classic from Bharathiraja – 16 Vayathinile. In the album for Mayilu, Ilayaraja has come out with his fullest sooth of music which can be derived from the music composer of his caliber alone. It is quite strange to note that the musician has drawn the lyricist Jeevan for most of the numbers. Ilayaraja is quite daring and challenging for his utility of new voices for the numbers. In a way, each song is a unique recipe for those who have the appetite of real music. Here’s the complete review of the songs from Mayilu:

Namaloda Paduthanda
Lyrics: Jeevan
Playback: Karthik, Tippu and Saindhavi

It is an esteem number from the maestro with giant voices from Karthik, Tippu and Saindhavi. Firs of all credit should be attributed for the lyricist Jeevan for tracing the colloquial touch of makka thokka, aachu pochchu. Even the mock at the recent trend, Chenthura Pottu Maari Eppo Sticker Pottu Achu, Manajal Poosum Ponunga Ippo Creama Thedi Pøøchu.Only for these easy verses that the song is mellowed with that much of copious nature. Ilayaraja’s penchant for separating the lyrics for clarity continues in this number too. The balanced straits of Karthik and Tippu make the effect of robust rendition, especially the aala Yaayaayayaya Yaayaayayayaaa Yaayaayayaya Yaayaayayayaaa Nanananananaa Nanananananaa. The choice of instruments too is catchy for our normal mind and each of them is vibrant with usual bass and rhythm. Saindhavi should feel proud to have unified her rendition for this special number from the maestro. Nalla paattukku nalla paaduthan.

Yathea
Lyrics: Jeevan
Playback: Bhavadharani and Sriram Parthasarathy

Once again Jeevan is mesmerizing the listeners with the ideal verses for this rustic number. It is quite fitting that his delving into the tune for this number with the voices of Pavatharini and Sriram. What makes this number highly different is the orchestration by which maestro exceeds his age. It is proved that age cannot wither his notes for perfect songs. In particular Pavatharini is at her best pitch for the verses and she even sidelines Sriram in the second stanza. A super combination of voices.

Kalyanamam Kalyanam
Lyrics: Jeevan
Playback: Tippu, Thiruvudiyan and Reeta

A festival outlook of sounds take place in this number as much as reality. It happened in the days of Kannadasan when he chose the verses to narrate the script of the film within the songs. This replicates in this number and Jeevan is capable of making our thoughts fly along with him. Thangatha Ezhacheduthu Thambalthula Kodupom Maruthani Vasathodu Marumagala Irupom.Nathisuthi Kalayama Methuvga Nadapom .Ilayaraja can boast himself pinching his own skin that even at this trend of variety he is able to muster his mastery. Otha Thuni Katti Vanga Enga Potu Udachutu Ponga. The simple instrumentation is the mark of the master. Tippu is full of throttle in his rendition while Reetha is charming with a mild singing. Thiruvadiyan echoes the likes of Manicka Vinayagam and the erstwhile musician MS Viswanthan, especially the one from ARRahman, Panithuli Mannil sangamam. A different approach to a hectic song from Ilayaraja.

Aadhisokka
Lyrics: Jeevan
Playback: Reeta

A lovely solo from Reetha to the lighter veined music from Ilayaraja. The combination of classic and folklore is the majesty of this number. Valachu Unna Pudichu Un Manasil Edam Pudipaen.Kurichu Vecha Pazhathil Thaen Kalanthu Na Padaipaen.Intha Morapu Verupu Ethuku Unnanaan Vidavae Mataen. We can still recollect Ilayaraja’s similar number in Punnagai Mannan with Vaani Jeyaram’s Kavithai Kelungal or even S Janaki’s Alagu Malarada from Vaithegi Kathirundaal. Jeevan’s lyrics are just much to the elevation of our thoughts. Paruthi Pinju Vedichu Paranthuduchu Panja Valthuduchu Arali Veetukula Azhagaga Enna Verutha Athana Paripaen Pøithan Solavae Mataen. Reetha proves that she deserves maestro’s choice.

Thukkamenna Thuyaramenna
Lyrics: Jeevan
Playback: Sriram Parthasarathy and Reeta

More than melodies, Ilayaraja stamps his notable number in the sad notes or sorrowful rendition. The likes of Yen Kuthama or Paravaiye Engu Irukkirai ( of course from his son Yuvan’s score), or the old ones like Naan Ullukkulla Sakkaravarthi. This number is a special tribute for those who are fond of sadness in the music. Jeevan’s philosophy is heightened with symbolic representations. Sriram is subtle in his rendition as much as Reetha’s silent killing.

Enna Kutham
Lyrics: Jeevan
Playback: Ilayaraja, Darshini

The touch of class as Ilayaraja himself sets the ball rolling. It is quite amazing to listen to this master of melody in this number. The utterance of the verses is a lesson for the current singers and Jeevan’s lyrics are the features that mark a nice composition.Ezhuthu Pizhai Irunthal Eduthu Vechu Serthu Padikaravan Yaaru Yaru Ezhuthu Ennavendru Solvathingu Yaaru Enna Kutham Senjanadi En Kiliyae Kannama Epadi Na Thangiduvaen Nalla Vazhi Sollama. There is a perfect synchrony of instrumentation and voice clarity. Sensuous rendition could be felt all through the song and the maestro is in total control of the song. The orchestration is fine textured with choicest instruments. A good finale for the album.

Verdict:

It is a natural process that stars shine on the dark skies at nights. But more appealing would be the rarest comet which will emanate new joy for the viewers. This occurs to the numbers of this album from Ilayaraja. He silences the critics who may thwart his talent and he justifies that his music itself is a genre. It may be said songs from this album may strike a new horizon in this year. Or this may be a second coming for Ilayaraja after a long lapse. In short, the notes are curiously knit for each number.

Rating: ★★★½☆
