Muppozhudhum Un Karpanaigal Review: An RS Effortainment

Posted at February 18th, 2012 under Featured, Movie Review, Review | Comments

Produced by RS Infotainment, Producer and now Director Eldred Kumar tried to live his heart with his desire to direct a movie. It was within his hands’ reach yet so far. Vested with the profit earned through both Vinnai Thaandi Varuvaya and Ko, and, of course, with their capital investment to venture into movies, Director Eldred Kumar could easily make it as a director. Yet, he still has to carry out the process of making a film successfully. Has he done or has he not?

Muppozhudhum Un Karpanaigal stars Atharva and Amala Paul in the lead roles. Both software professionals get to move in and share the same apartment for an IT project competition at Bengaluru. They are hitherto unknown to each other. Love blossoms for Atharva one-sided at which point Amala Paul is taken to the US by her father. She gets married but still Atharva finds Amala Paul at home and begins to live in with her.

How? That takes you to the interval and more revelations on how Atharva lives with Amala Paul while Amala Paul gets married to someone else in the US; what type of person is Atharva and his back story are all revealed in the second half. Further, we are led to assume if Amala Paul plays a dual role in the movie. Get all your answers for these questions at the theaters!

While someone like Eldred Kumar, a Producer and Director, makes a film, the entire process and the film rest on his credentials alone. The director’s ability is viewed with a magnifying glass. However, the director will only be lauded for his attempt and effort at what he has tried than for accomplishment, which might come a film or two later. The first half presents a mishmash of ideas and confusions of Atharva living in with Amala Paul and meets Amala Paul II as the CEO of his company.

He doesn’t recognize her yet phones Amala Paul I and tells her that she resembles her. CEO Amala Paul is jealous while Atharva talks to other girls at the office. We are taken via the labyrinth of confusions before they dawn on you in the second half. The director can be lauded for untying the knots in the script successfully. All that we are unaware of dawn on us in the second half.

Still, the director has hit many a miscued shot from the tee to the hole. Many a time, the director thought or was led to believe that certain plot points would work but they backfired. Wrong strategies may backfire. For example, Atharva turns a psychopath murderer (as he suffers from motivational delusion) without much of psychological trauma on him. Atharva is raised by a loving and compassionate mother. Such amount of love showered on someone might lead to positive behavior. She dies a natural death and is not even murdered.

Logic seems to slide in a few places as well:

1. Amala Paul and Atharva moving in as roommates in the IT contest.

2. No big reason behind Atharva’s psychological tendencies.

3. As Amala Paul meets Atharva after long, she should have said, “Hey Ram (Atharva)! Surprised to meet you!” but she doesn’t. She was dying to meet him again.

4. Atharva’s mother thinks tonsuring will save her from preying men. Well, it is her body they try to covet.

Positives

Technical Excellence

  • A Couple of Songs
  • First Half
  • Stunt Scenes
  • Ideas, Concepts and Visuals (Cinematography)

Negatives

  • Screenplay
  • Editing
  • Santhanam (Oh, he is in the film!)
  • Lack of Novelty (in the concept)

Verdict

The director’s strengths and weaknesses come to the fore and they project themselves on screen. The strengths are in his determination, command, execution, finance, technical excellence, conception and in his ability to deceive and clarify. The weaknesses are in his miscues, misconceptions, screenplay techniques, identification (of what works and what doesn’t) and in the producer’s perspective. A director is far different from a producer. Understanding this concept would have helped make a film better than his current output. Muppozhudhum Un Karpanaigal – Motivational Delusion!

Rating: ★★★☆☆
